At Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy we embrace the fact that every child is different and, therefore, the educational needs of every child are different. For some children this may mean that they have Special Educational Needs.

In terms of what we offer children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities, it is important to emphasise that, as much as possible, this provision is designed by the relevant staff members working alongside the child, the child’s family, the child themselves and, where appropriate, outside agencies* (e.g. a Speech and Language Therapist or an Educational Psychologist).

All children are set targets and encouraged to set their own personal goals. Pupils' targets may be connected to their learning in English and Maths. For other children, they may be to do with social interaction, communication, emotional difficulties or overcoming physical issues (for example developing fine motor control) We try to ensure that the targets are very specific to the needs of the child.

How is the curriculum and learning environment adapted for children with SEND?

We believe that inclusive education means supporting all pupils to learn, enjoy school and participate in all aspects of school life. Our curriculum includes, not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also a range of additional opportunities to enrich the experiences of our children, including opportunities for the development of skills essential for life-long learning, personal growth and independence.

We adapt the curriculum and learning environment for pupils with SEND and offer many different forms of additional provision. Some examples include:

* Additional in-class support

* Additional out-of-class support Team around the child support

* Flexible groupings (including small group work)

* Access to specific differentiated resources

* Access to a wide range of outside agencies.

* Access to ICT and technology Using a range of teaching and learning styles

Additional provision and intervention programmes are monitored and discussed regularly to ensure that the pupil is making expected or better than expected progress and whether the provision is successful or needs adapting.

The staff at Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy are kept up to date with training and the latest developments in SEN education and how to ensure excellent rates of progress for all children.

We ensure that all our extra-curricular activities, including residential trips, are adapted for children’s specific needs. We are delighted that our pupils with Special Educational Needs are confident and happy to participate fully in school trips, residentials, extra-curricular clubs, creative and performance events, sports teams and school committees.

For more information, please see the SEND School Offer. If you have any queries about our local offer please contact the school. Our Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator is Anna Linsley and our SEND Governor is Helen Casson.
