Y4 Violin Performance

After only 10 weeks of lessons, the Y4 children astounded us with their prowess on the violin with a concert for the whole school plus parents and carers. They played a number of pieces, charting their progress from the very beginning to the final performance. Many thanks to Mrs Sally Bartholomew for being such a great teacher and to the children for all their hard work.

Duckpool Update

What a busy week!

Firstly, it was Anti-Bullying Week, which we introduced with Odd Socks day on Monday to celebrate our differences.

We've commemorated Remembrance Day on Tuesday with a special assembly for everyone in our Brunel Primary community. There were poppies in abundance, which made a truly striking splash of colour on a dull November day.

There was also a cyber security workshop run by the RAF and organised by Miss Henning, which was a huge success.

Wednesday brought more excitement, for a group from our class went to Looe to film for next year's Beyond Paradise Christmas Special. Wow we can't wait to see it!

Then on Friday we supported Children in Need 2025 by collecting all our loose change to donate. Well, Duckpool, what a generous class you are! We were absolutely astounded by the amount collected. Thank you so much to our wonderful, supportive families. During the evening, we met at the Guild Hall for the Christmas Light Switch-on and the early chance to practise some carols.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Maya Mayhem hits Duckpool...

What an exciting start to our new topic for this half term ' How did the impact of the Ancient Maya affect their society and beyond?' Please check out the knowledge web below for further details. Also, huge thanks to Miss Henning for her inspiration and sublime organisational skills.

We began with 4 different activities spaced over Thursday and Friday, which included:

  • map work looking at the region and it's major physical and human geographical features
  • Maya headdress, with lots of embellishment (plenty of glue required!)
  • Pok-a-tok an ancient game involving lots of energy and a great deal of fun
  • Researching Maya spirit animals and then making prints of the children's designs
So a pretty busy couple of days but the best and most memorable start to our new topic area. Now we can't wait to learn more about this fascinating civilisation.

Please ask your child all about it!

Duckpool update...

So it's been another very busy week with so many exciting events, including an African Dance workshop and research to commemorate Black History Month.

Also, Duckpool have been producing some super factfiles to show off their knowledge from this half term's learning on Rivers. They have been speaking like Geographers and writing like Geographers; using key (tier3) vocabulary such as 'evaporation, precipitation and condensation' ...

Excitingly, we teamed up with Lantic class to read them our fantastic Beastie Stories, we think you can see from their faces how much they enjoyed our stories.

Well, that's just about it for this half term, thank you for reading our blog and have a great holiday!

We have enjoyed making a class book, made up of our own uniques stories based on 'The Beasties'.
We were proud to receive a Class Headteachers award for our achievement and progress in writing and we can't wait to show our book to KS1 next week!

Y4/5 Music Maestros

We were so delighted this week to stage a musical extravaganza at Brunel which was attended by representatives from 10 different schools, including our Y5 pupils. Ages ranged from Y5-Y13 and the event was staged by The Gabriel Explore Vocal workshop. Only two schools in Cornwall were chosen to host, with a view to performing in Truro Cathedral next year and we were thrilled to take part. Many thanks to Mrs Swabey and Mr Jane for organising.

Our Y4 children are continuing with their weekly violin lessons and we've been impressed with how they are progressing each week - so very well done to them!

Mental Health Awareness Day was a ray of sunshine in October, as we all wore yellow this Friday and completed some mindful activities.

Thank you also for your support with Harvest Festival and contributing to the wonderful Saltash Food Bank. It was lovely to celebrate with so many parents and carers in assembly on Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Duckpool Diary...

Welcome to another busy week in Duckpool class!

We've been finishing the final drafts of our stories in English and as it was National Poetry Day on Thursday, we've written some Harvest Haiku, really focusing upon making each word count.

In our oracy work this week, we have concentrated on using our physical oracy skills; using our voice, body language and aiming to engage our audience effectively. We combined this with speaking like a geographer to demonstrate our knowledge about the water cycle.

This week's science centred on an investigation into the thermal insulating properties of various materials. So we considered the best design to keep a teacher's coffee warm on the playground with some surprising results. Please ask your child which material proved to be the best.

Tuesday saw our very first Two Tyre Tuesday in KS2, which was an opportunity for children to bring scooters (plus helmets of course) to school have some playtime fun. This was a huge success, many thanks to Mrs Williamson for organising.

Also, as promised here are some of our fabulous self-portraits, how many of our class  do you recognise?

Next Monday will be our Harvest assembly, each class has been working on their contribution. Thank you for all your generous contributions to the Saltash foodbank.

Have a great weekend.

What a lovely week in Duckpool class!

Making the most of the beautiful September sunshine, PE for this half term has been all about orienteering and we've enjoyed following maps and directions to collect clues to solve puzzles. Huge thanks to Mrs Williamson for organising the fun sessions, which have shown our fantastic grounds at their best. Also, as you can see, we've been having  great fun in the builder's yard.

Art has been a revelation too as we're working on drawing self portraits using our own poetry from the very first week of term..yes, it's hard to imagine we know. As soon as they're finished, we'll be super keen to share them with you.

In computing, we're learning all about systems and networks, as always knowing how to use technology both safely and respectfully is central to this. We're also using Showbie our new Trust program across the curriculum and becoming quite proficient already.

This half term term's RE focuses upon what it means to be a Humanist in Britain Today, whilst PSHE is based on Being Me and particularly on facing new challenges positively and setting personal goals. French is also Being Me this half term, so we've been practising introducing ourselves and having brief conversations.

Last but certainly not least, in music we're learning about musical terms such as dynamics, pitch, ostinato and timbre, then putting them into action. Our Y4 children are also having weekly violin lessons, so please ask them how it's going.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Duckpool go down to the woods...

Well, what a busy start to the Autumn term it's been for Duckpool class!

Firstly, to launch our 'Rivers' topic, we took our first trip to Coombe Woods to do a spot of water sampling for the Great UK WaterBlitz. We were testing for nitrates and phosphates in water samples taken from 3 different locations. It needed to be absolutely accurate as we had to send our results off to help monitor water quality in this important investigation. Hopefully, we've produced some scientists of the future and we thought you might like to see some photos.

Workwise, in English we're writing our own diary entries based on the book 'The Beasties' and focusing on using descriptive language along with accurate grammar and punctuation. Handwriting and presentation are also a focus for this half term.

In maths, we're working on Place Value and numbers to 1,000,000, as well as concentrating  on our times tables.

This half term term's science is all about Properties of Materials, with lots of opportunities planned for practical investigations. Whereas Geography is based on the topic 'What are rivers and how are they used?'

So, that's just a few subjects to be going on with, more about the rest of the curriculum next week..

Have a lovely weekend.
