It has been a slightly different week in Mousehole Class due to the extremely warm weather, but the children have been absolutely wonderful throughout. They have shown fantastic resilience and maturity, adapting brilliantly to the changing routines and helping each other to stay safe and comfortable.
We have made the most of the shady areas of the field, as well as enjoying fun activities with ice and water to help everyone keep cool. The children have been incredibly sensible, remembering to drink plenty of water and look after one another.
Today was a real highlight as we celebrated Brunel Day! The children had a fantastic time taking part in a range of engineering activities inspired by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
They worked collaboratively to design and construct their own bridges, thinking carefully about strength, stability and teamwork. We were also lucky enough to take part in an exciting workshop led by 'Brunel' himself, where the children learned fascinating facts about his life, achievements and the incredible engineering projects he was responsible for.
The enthusiasm, creativity and problem-solving skills on display throughout the day were fantastic, and it was wonderful to see the children so engaged in their learning.
Although it has been an unusual week because of the high temperatures, Mousehole Class have continued to shine. We are incredibly proud of the resilience, positivity and kindness they have shown, and Brunel Day was the perfect way to finish another memorable week together!

Another wonderful week has flown by in Mousehole Class, and the children have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm, creativity and hard work across the curriculum!
In English, we have been exploring verbs and the suffixes -er and -or, thinking about how these can change words and their meanings. The children have also planned, written and performed their own Kennings poems. We were so impressed with their imaginative ideas and confident performances, which brought lots of fun and creativity to our classroom.
This week in maths:
The children enjoyed another exciting session with Cricket Chris, developing their cricket skills further by learning how to bowl the ball accurately. There was some fantastic concentration, teamwork and determination on display.
In computing, we have been exploring desktop publishing, learning how to organise text and images effectively to create attractive and informative documents.
We had an exciting hook lesson to launch our new history enquiry question:
"How have children's lives changed?"
The children became history detectives, sorting different children's objects into the time periods they thought they belonged to: Tudor, Victorian or Modern Day. They enjoyed discussing their ideas and making predictions before finding out the answers.
To deepen our understanding, we then worked collaboratively to create large-scale artistic representations of a Tudor child and a Victorian child. The children absolutely loved this activity, and the finished pieces are now proudly displayed in our classroom for everyone to enjoy.
In art, we began our new unit on sculpture. We started by exploring what sculpture is and how sculptors create three-dimensional artwork. Using the boxes kindly brought in from home, the children experimented with cutting them into different shapes and discovering ways to join them together without using glue or tape. They showed fantastic problem-solving skills and creativity as they investigated different construction techniques.

We are delighted to say the children have entered the final half term of the year so positively, showing fantastic focus, enthusiasm and maturity right from the start!
In English, we have begun exploring riddle poetry and kennings. The children have really enjoyed playing with language, thinking creatively, and performing their ideas aloud. There has been lots of fun, laughter and impressive use of vocabulary as they experiment with word choices and rhythm.
In maths this week:
We have now finished our topic "Why is our world wonderful?" The children produced some absolutely fantastic double page spreads, showcasing everything they have learned about oceans, continents, and human and physical features around the world. Their work demonstrated great knowledge, creativity and pride.
This week, the children had their first session with Cricket Chris, who introduced them to the skills and excitement of cricket. The children showed great enthusiasm and teamwork and thoroughly enjoyed getting active and learning something new.

It has been a wonderful start to the final half term, and we are so proud of how engaged and motivated the children are as they continue their learning journey.



We have had another busy and enjoyable week in Year 2 and 3, with lots of fantastic learning taking place across the curriculum!
In English, the children have been busy editing and improving their descriptive setting writing. They have worked hard to check their punctuation, improve vocabulary choices and make their writing even more engaging for the reader. We have been so impressed with the imagination and detail they have included in their work.
This week in maths:
In geography, we have continued exploring our wonderful world by learning more about the oceans and identifying different human and physical features across the globe. The children enjoyed using maps and atlases to help locate and discuss different places around the world.
In PE, the children have been learning and practising a variety of different jumps as part of our athletics unit. They showed great coordination, balance and determination while trying out new techniques.
As part of Mental Health Week, we spent time thinking carefully about feelings, friendships and wellbeing. The children had thoughtful discussions about how emotions can affect us and explored positive ways to solve disputes in friendships kindly and respectfully. We were very proud of the maturity and empathy they showed during these activities.

Year 2 & 3 Weekly Learning Update
Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely Easter break. It has been wonderful to see the children return to school so positively-they have settled back into routines brilliantly and have been eager to get started with their new learning.
We launched our new topic with a fun and engaging "wow starter". The children worked together to create a gallery showcasing both physical and human features of the Earth. They also wrote interesting facts about the different oceans, demonstrating great curiosity and teamwork.
In English, we have begun our new genre: descriptive settings. The children explored what they already know and identified key features of this type of writing. We also started to look at adverbials of time and subordination, helping us to build more detailed and interesting sentences.
In maths, both year groups have been busy developing new skills:
We began our new PSHE topic, Relationships, by discussing roles and responsibilities both at home and in different jobs. The children shared some thoughtful ideas and made great links to their own experiences.
In RE, we started our new unit: "What do Christians learn from the creation story?" The children worked collaboratively to explore and represent different parts of the Genesis creation narrative, thinking about what Christians believe about how the world was made.
In art, the children revisited and showcased the skills they developed last term in observational drawing. They practised sketching shape, adding tone through shading, experimenting with cross-hatching, and using mark making to create patterns. It was fantastic to see their growing confidence and attention to detail.
In PE, we started our athletics unit, focusing on how to sprint effectively. The children showed great energy and determination as they practised their running technique.
These are just some of the highlights from a busy and productive first week back. It's been lovely to see such enthusiasm for learning across the class-we're excited for the term ahead!

It has been another full and exciting week of learning in Year 2 and 3!
In English, we have been learning a new text through oracy, using lots of discussion and performance to help us really understand it. The children have also been practising their VIPERS reading skills (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Sequencing) to deepen their comprehension.
We have also been exploring the features of instructional writing, identifying what makes a clear and effective set of instructions. The children were fantastic at spotting headings, numbered steps and time connectives.
In maths, both year groups have been working hard on key skills:
Year 2 have been learning how to subtract across 10 and have also been solving mixed addition and subtraction problems.
Year 3 have been focusing on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, as well as related division facts.
Please continue practising times tables at home with Year 3 - it really makes a difference! (Year 2-x2, x5 and x10).
We have started an exciting new topic: "Why are rainforests important to us?" The children began by asking thoughtful questions and sharing their existing knowledge.
We have been learning about where tropical rainforest biomes are located around the world and have started to look more closely at the Amazon Rainforest. The children were fascinated to discover just how important rainforests are for our planet.
In PSHE, we began our new unit, Healthy Me. The children set themselves a personal challenge to improve their fitness, showing great maturity and enthusiasm.
In PE, we have started our new unit on striking and fielding. This week focused on developing accuracy when throwing, catching and stopping a rolling ball. There was some fantastic teamwork and determination on display.
In French, we have continued learning vocabulary linked to "My Family", building confidence in speaking and understanding simple phrases.
In Science, we began our topic on light, thinking about different light sources and how light helps us to see.
Next Thursday, we will be celebrating World Book Day. Children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character, and a fun-filled day of reading activities has been planned across the school to celebrate our love of books!
We can't wait to see the wonderful costumes and share our favourite stories together.
What a fantastic half term it has been!
The children have worked incredibly hard over the past weeks, showing determination, enthusiasm and such positive attitudes towards their learning. We are so proud of everything they have achieved - not only academically, but also in the way they have supported one another, challenged themselves and lived out our school values each and every day.
We truly couldn't have asked for a better way to end the half term than with our wonderful trip to Cotehele. The children represented our school brilliantly. They planted saplings with care and determination, demonstrating excellent teamwork and responsibility. It was a joy to see them embracing the experience so positively and showing off their very best Brunel values throughout the day.
They were a credit to the school.
Now it is time for a well-earned rest. We hope you all enjoy a relaxing and refreshing half term break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back, ready for another exciting term of learning.

Another fantastic week of learning in Year 2 and 3, full of creativity, teamwork and confidence-building moments. The children have impressed us with their focus and enthusiasm across the curriculum.
In English, the children have been developing their writing skills further by learning how to use subordinating conjunctions and rhetorical questions to make their writing more engaging and detailed. They have also been busy planning their own recounts through letters, thinking carefully about audience, purpose and structure. We are seeing real growth in both confidence and independence in their writing.
In Maths, learning looked a little different across the year groups:
Year 2 have been adding two-digit numbers, using a range of practical and written methods.
Year 3 have been multiplying and dividing by 3, exploring both sharing and grouping to deepen their understanding.
The children worked hard to explain their thinking and support one another.
In History, we learned about the significant figure Amelia Earhart. The children were fascinated by her achievements in flight and enjoyed discussing why she is remembered as an important and inspiring person.
Our PSHE lessons focused on thinking about others and challenging ourselves to work collaboratively. The children worked in groups to design a garden for someone with needs different from their own, showing empathy, creativity and excellent teamwork skills.
DT was a real highlight this week as the children brought their pneumatic toy designs to life. The level of inventiveness, problem-solving and perseverance on display was wonderful to see-every design was unique, and the children were incredibly proud of their finished creations.
In PE, we brought together our whole-class machine dance. The final performance included individual, paired, small-group and whole-class elements, all linked smoothly together. The children showed great coordination, timing and confidence.
On Friday, we celebrated Love Yourself Day. Children and adults were invited to wear things they love, and we spent time talking about self-confidence, kindness and appreciating what makes us all unique. It was a joyful and positive way to end the week.
Last week was another busy and productive one in Year 2/3, with the children working hard across the curriculum and continuing to develop their skills and understanding.
English:
In English, the children focused on simple sentence construction, learning how to write clear and complete sentences. We revisited the importance of capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, and began to think carefully about punctuation to make our writing easier to read and understand. The children showed great effort in applying these skills to their independent work.
Maths:
In Maths, we worked on solving addition and subtraction problems, encouraging the children to choose appropriate strategies and explain their thinking. They practised using number bonds, place value knowledge and written methods to help them solve calculations accurately.
History:
Our History learning focused on the Wright brothers, exploring who they were and why they are significant. The children learned about their determination, early experiments and how their work helped lead to the first successful powered flight. This linked well to our wider topic on the history of flight.
RE:
In Religious Education, we learned about the first disciples, discussing who they were and why Jesus chose them. The children reflected thoughtfully on ideas of friendship, trust and following a role model.
Other Learning:
Alongside these focus areas, the children continued to engage enthusiastically in all areas of the curriculum. They showed positive attitudes, curiosity and a willingness to challenge themselves in lessons throughout the week.
