This week, the children in year 5 and 6 were so lucky to spend the day learning about World War Two with a visit from 'Blast From the Past'.
They started the day with a presentation about Winston Churchill and some video footage from important moments in the war. Then they took part in some workshops where they played a game of rummy using propaganda posters, identified mystery objects and used different codes to find messages. In the afternoon, they made gliders based on spitfires and Messerschmitts and we created our own Battle of Britain in the playground to see how far they would fly.
It was a fantastic day and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Another busy week of learning...
This week, the Yr5s and 6s have been learning about speech within texts.
We have been practising coming up with our own direct speech, punctuating it
accurately as well as adding action and emotion. This will help them to then
insert dialogue into their own consequence story, inspired by the novel Letters
from the Lighthouse.
Within maths, we are continuing to work through
our Place Value unit which includes understanding the value of number, ordering
and comparing number. Their books are looking beautiful - they are taking real
pride in setting out their work correctly and explaining their reasoning in
detail.
This week has been extremely busy.
In English, we have started our unit of writing based on the book 'Letters from the Lighthouse' by Emma Carroll. The children will be writing a short consequence story about some evacuee children who find themselves in danger when they do not listen to a warning. We looked at some example texts and explored the plot of the story.
In maths, we continued our unit on place value. We have been focusing on numbers up to a million. We have been looking at the value of each digit and learning how to correctly say and write longer numbers.
On Monday, Treyarnon were able to visit St. Anne's Residential Home as part of the Archie Project. They thoroughly enjoyed their time playing games, reading books and eating biscuits with the elderly residents. I was extremely proud of them.
