Class Blog for Marazion Y3 Y4

Week Ending 04.09.24

It has been another great week for Marazion class. We have celebrated National Poetry Day 2024 by taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the world's largest poetry lesson!
In maths, we have continued to work on place value and year 3 have just began their journey with addition and subtraction where they worked with key vocabulary and have applied number bonds within 10 ready to use their key knowledge across hundreds soon.
In Geography, we learnt about different volcanoes, where they are in the world and what 'active', 'dormant' and 'extinct' volcanoes are.
We enjoyed learning more cricket skills with Cricket Chris and dodging skills in PE (netball).
In Science, we've been learning about three different types of rock (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) and how they are formed. We've already modelled some in edible form and are learning a song, with actions to help us remember. So this week we're going to put on our safety specs and investigate which rock would make the best statue.

On Thursday, we learn about Harvest ahead of our Harvest Assembly on Monday.

The children have been developing their SHAPE for learning well-can they tell you what this means?

On Thursday next week, we are celebrating Mental Health Awareness day where they children are welcome to wear something yellow and we will be exploring different ways of keeping mindful.

Week Ending 27.09.24

English:
In English, the children have written superb descriptive settings about a stormy sea at Marazion. They used a range of devices like figurative language to create imagery and have worked really hard in producing such wonderful pieces.

Maths:
In maths we have come to the end of our Place Value unit. Next week we will start on our addition and subtraction unit where we will continue to work hard with our number facts so that our mental, reasoning and problem solving strategies develop.

PSHE:
Teamwork is incredibly important, not only at school or in team sports, but in so many situations through out life. We have picked apart what it really means to demonstrate teamwork in different scenario and the impact this has as opposed to not.
On Wednesday, we had a session with Lyndsey who talked to the children about mental health and gave some useful tips.

PE and Cricket:
The children have continued to work on their ball skills in PE lessons where they have continued with netball skills and in cricket with Cricket Chris this week. Cricket will continue and the children will need to be in kit next Wednesday again as well as Tuesday for PE.

Art:
Our volcano paintings in the style of Jackson Pollock have started to take shape!

Science:
We continue to investigate rock types in fun ways!

Some of the children also enjoyed visiting St Anne's on Monday!

We've had some great entries to the Wildlife photo competition and some very enthusiastic children who have shown and spoken to us about their photos.

Week Ending 20.09.24

Marazion have enjoyed visiting  St Anne's and playing with the residents this week. They showed a lot of respect and had lots of fun together! We had Cricket Chris in to teach us catching skills which we loved! The children have thoroughly enjoyed splattering and dripping paint in an abstract style like the artist Jackson Pollock ahead of creating their own paintings later this term. We welcomed back Miss Roberts who comes in and helps us by listening to us read. She kindly donated us a new classroom book, 'See Inside Planet Earth', which links perfectly to our topic and the children have already been enjoying it whilst all cosied up in our book corner!
As well as all of this, all of our other wonderful learning has continued. Can your child tell you a type of figurative language (maybe simile, metaphor or alliteration)? Perhaps they could tell you the structure of a volcano?

Magnificent Marazion!

We are so proud of how Marazion class have settled in these last two weeks. They have really shown us how incredible they are with their 'Issy Manners' throughout the day and they have enjoyed starting our learning for the year.

In English, we have started our unit on descriptive settings, where we have retold the text, found some features and worked a lot with vocabulary.

In maths, our Place Value unit has started in year 3 and year 4. The children are working hard in number and knowing their values.

Our topic of 'How active is our planet?' has sparked interest and many many questions which we look forward to finding out this term! We learnt, this week, about the different layers of the Earth. In art, we began to look at the artist Jackson Pollock who will inspire our EXPLOSIVE volcano paintings later this term. We talked a lot about changes; how they makes us feel and about different thoughts we may have in PSHE. We worked on how to help ourselves when these thoughts and feelings are troubling us.

We have also enjoyed our first reading assembly this week where Miss Pentreath read the inspirational true story 'Emmanuel's Dream'-can your child tell you what it was about?

Don't forget to log reading so that we can give out more awards and prizes to the children please!

The children presented their vocabulary findings with the rest of the class with their groups. They discovered lots of impressive 'wow words' to use in their own writing!

KIRFs are kicking off!

Games Night is Back!

This half term's Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) for maths can be found in the document below. KIRFs are carefully planned and considered for each year group, right from Nursery through to Year 6 in order to provide our students with an increased speed, fluency and confidence with core number facts, which are the very foundation of their maths learning.

At Brunel, we think maths is far from boring! There are lots of exciting and fun ways to practise and learn these facts; take a look in the document below to find a variety of ideas, resources and online links.

What's more - you are invited to Brunel's half-termly Games Night! Join us on Thursday to play a wide range of family favourites: board games, card games, puzzles and more... All of these will help to sharpen maths skills, whilst having fun: it's win-win!

Everyone is welcome: all year groups, friends and family. There will be refreshments available for children.

During the evening, teachers will be available to be challenged to a game or two, as well as answer any questions about your child's KIRFs and maths learning.
FREE resources will also be available to take away in order to help children to practise their KIRFs at home.

We look forward to seeing you there!
