First Week Completed!

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am pleased to be writing to you at the end of a week that has seen Brunel return to something approaching normal. We are really grateful to be a whole school community again and I have seen many smiles and happy children (and staff) as I walked around the classrooms.

Thank you for bearing with us while we embed the new pick up and drop off routines. Please can Year 3 parents and carers wait with their children until a teacher is present, if you need to walk along the drive to do so that is fine. All other year groups seem to be working well but we may need to tweak things as we go along.

Obviously we are still in a national lockdown and remain ensconced in our class bubbles so some of our usual events will continue to take place virtually. This morning the school council met online and voted to support Comic Relief Red Nose Day on Friday 19th March by holding a Bad Hair Day. It will be uniforms as usual with the addition of any hairstyle your child would like to wear! Donation amounts of your choice can be handed in to class teachers on the day.

The photographer is in to take class photos on Monday 15th March so make sure your children look like their usual smart selves at the start of the week!

Below are this week's Achievers, congratulations and well done to everyone chosen.

Have a lovely weekend.

Yours sincerely

Welcome Back

Yesterday we had a glimpse that the warmth of Spring is on its way and despite the difference in the weather today , the atmosphere at school is one of hope that things are beginning to change for the better. Everyone at Brunel is so looking forward to welcoming all children back to school from the 8th March and we will be spending the next few days discussing what we need to do to prepare for a safe return and how we will continue to build on the learning that the children have been doing both at home and at school. An email will be sent out with more details as soon as all arrangements are finalised. There are many exciting events to look forward to this half term including World Book Day on Thursday 4th March, immediately followed by St Piran's Day on Friday 5th March. Teachers will let you know on their learning grids how we intend to celebrate this year. Above are some of the Art Club 'Seascape' submissions - keep your wondeful paintings coming in.
We are looking forward to seeing the children in their TEAMs lessons throughout this week and everyone in person very soon. We've missed you all!

Well done everyone.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that this letter finds you well and you are looking forward to the half term break. I want to say a massive thank you to every single Brunel parent and carer. You are either on the front line, keeping the country running as a critical worker, or at home, home schooling and possibly juggling working from home as well. Home schooling and remote teaching are tough, but, amidst difficult circumstances, pupils, parents, carers and staff have made huge progress with getting to grips with such a different way of working. The introduction of live and recorded lessons has been met with overwhelming positivity and we are glad that this is enabling many of our pupils to maintain structure and continuity in their education, as well as providing valuable interaction with their friends, teachers and TAs.

The DfE has confirmed that schools will close to all children over half term as usual and I’m sure that staff, children and those delivering home learning will be grateful for a chance to pause. The DfE has also issued the following advice regarding a positive COVID test in the holidays.

Where pupils still attending school test positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) during the holidays, having developed symptoms more than 48 hours since being in school, schools are not required to take any action. Parents and carers should follow contact tracing instructions provided by NHS Test and Trace.
However, where pupils still attending school test positive having developed symptoms within 48 hours of being in school, the school is asked to assist in identifying close contacts and advising self-isolation, as the individual may have been infectious whilst in school.

Therefore, please email me, head@brunelprimary.co.uk, with URGENT POSITIVE RESULT in the subject box if your child does test positive within 48 hours of being in school as it is important that we implement track and trace for potential close contacts. All other emails will be answered on 23rd February when we return to school following the training day on Monday 22nd.

As always, thank you for the positive emails and kind messages of support and gratitude that continue to lift the spirits of the staff. They are working so hard and it’s always heartening to be appreciated. We hope that you know we appreciate you too. This is a team effort and I think all of us, at home and in school, have risen to the challenge admirably.

Yours sincerely,

Fossil Hunting in KS1

This week I've taken part in an exciting TEAMS meeting with KS1 and 'Fossil Hunter - John' who had the Y1/2 children discussing such terms as extant and extinct, Triassic and Jurassic and naming fossils such as ammonites and its modern equivalent, nautilus. The children showed and named fossils that they themselves owned. The best part was that many of the children (and John) were wearing their fossil hunting hats!

Week 5 Achievers

This week we have taken part in a virtual Ofsted inspection. Two HMIs (Her Majesty's Inspectors) spent two days finding out about the improvements we've made since their last interim visit in September 19. They spoke to staff and pupils and looked closely at our remote learning provision; it is on this aspect that they will make a judgement.

Attached in the pdf below are this week's special Achievers. In addition to the children nominated by their teachers, I would like to nominate all the staff who have worked extra hard in school this week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Lockdown Achievers

Dear Parents and Carers,

In the good old pre-covid days, a Friday at Brunel would usually finish with a celebration of the children’s weekly achievements in our aptly named ‘Achievers Assembly’. All members of staff are able to put forward pupils who they think have excelled and deserve whole school recognition.  It could be for such things as displaying characteristics of effective learning such as perseverance, willingness to have a go and co-operation; for an outstanding piece of work; for achieving something for the first time or for kindness to others. Whatever the reason, it is something to be proud of and worthy of sharing with the wider Brunel community and those of you at home.

Click on the file below to see the first of our Lockdown Achievers and I’m sure you’ll be impressed with who has been selected. If you want to experience the total ‘Achievers’ experience at home you’ll need to sing along to Proud by Heather Small, or perhaps your child would be able to sing it to you!

If your child was not chosen this week, please can you give them a special Headteacher’s clap from me as I know they (and you) have all been working very hard.

Well done everyone.

Well done everyone.

I’m sure that you will want to join me in thanking all the staff at Brunel for their hard work over the last two weeks in ensuring the delivery of high-quality remote learning. This is not something that anyone who trained as a teacher had expected, or trained to do, and the speed with which they have learnt and adapted is commendable.

Equally commendable are the parents, carers and children who are working at home, often in extremely challenging circumstances; a huge well done to you too! The photo shows salt pots made by children at home and at school.

Working from home is not ideal; we know from the first lockdown how hard it was for some of you to maintain a routine or to support your child and keep them motivated. This is why we are asking KS2 children to log on and complete the assignments on TEAMS daily and KS1 children to complete and show us their work via email or photographs.

In this way we can keep in contact, provide feedback on the work submitted and give the children a sense of purpose for completing the tasks as well as providing a much needed routine.

Please try to encourage your child to finish and return as many of the assignments as possible. The older children should be able to work, mostly independently, without very much parental teaching or input.

There is a much greater expectation this time around that children carry on with all their usual learning. However, we know, as with the first lockdown, that many of you will also be working from home, that you may be dealing with poorly family members, have more than one child learning from home, or have pre-school children who need your time, and therefore may not always be able to support your child’s learning. Please contact class teachers about any difficulties you are having and, like the rest of us, just do your best. Keeping healthy and happy should be everyone’s priority.  Suzanne Cooper.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you are all well and beginning to adapt to the latest set of restrictions. If you have the chance please look at the latest newsletter (under the News tab 8.01.21) which summarises some of the activities that have taken place this week online and in school. Staff, parents, carers and pupils have once again shown amazing adaptability to switch so rapidly to a new way of learning.

For those of you at home, thank you for supporting your child with remote learning. Please can you ensure that KS2 children login to TEAMS to register before 9.15 each day. They will then be able to see the planned learning and the times of any online meetings or lessons.

The learning grids for Reception and KS1 can be found on the class blogs on the website, as before, as can further information about what is happening in all year groups.

We have had several requests to loan an iPad or laptop and will contact you as soon as one becomes available. In the meantime, please let your child’s class teacher know if you are experiencing difficulties.

We are awaiting further information about the provision of vouchers in lieu of free school meals but have food packs available for anyone who requires them. In addition, I have been asked to remind you about the Community Fridge (4 Fore Street) which will be open on the following days during lockdown:
Tuesday 2.30-4.32pm
Wednesday 10am-12pm
Friday 2.30-4.30pm
Saturday 10am-12pm
The food is free. No questions asked. It is surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill. There is often bread and fruit and occasionally boxes of pasties. Please feel free to pop in and take a look.
