British Values

At Brunel we uphold and teach children about British Values which are defined as

Democray
The rule of law
Individual libery
Mutua respect
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

These values are taught explicitly through our Personal, Social, Health and Emotional lessons (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). They are also taught through the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum which includes real opportunities for exploring them, for example in history and geography. Actively promoting these values also includes challenging opinions or behaviour in school that are contrary to them. We have been reminding children of these values in assemblies recently and below is an information sheet explaining the values in more detail.
Also below are this week's Achievers. Congratulations and well done to all who were chosen. Please visit the class blogs for more details of the learning happening across the school.

    Viking Invasion

The Vikings have invaded Brunel!  Please visit Looe, Finnygook, Pendower and Seaton class blogs to see more photos and find out all about the different learning that took place. Thank you to parents and carers for being so inventive with the children's costumes, they certainly looked imposing as they moved around the school.

Please see below for our most recent Achievers. Congratulations and well done to all who were chosen.

    Welcome Back Everyone

Happy New Year from all at Brunel!

The Christmas holiday is often a very busy time for parents and carers but I hope that you had an enjoyable festive season and were able to spend some of the time relaxing with special family and friends.

The children (and staff!) have returned to school enthusiastically and I'm delighted to hear that Father Christmas has been very generous and delivered presents to everyone.

The new term has meant that we have welcomed two new teachers to KS1. The school council were tasked with finding out more about them on behalf of their classes and so Miss Elliott and Miss Hughes sportingly attended a second gruelling interview earlier this week. The children asked about their hobbies, their teaching careers so far and what made them apply to work at Brunel but also came up with some very interesting additional questions that really forced them to think. These included:

    • Do you have any pets?
    • Which celebrity would you like to be and would you go on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here?
    • What is your favourite emoji? and
    • Does pineapple belong on a pizza?

Thank you school council - you did a brilliant job. Below are this week's Achievers. Congratulations and well done to all who were chosen.

    Christmas Tree Festival

Portwrinkle Class enjoyed using their hands to print these beautiful blue Brunel angels.

The Brunel Christmas tree is on display in St Nicholas and St Faiths church alongside many other brightly decorated trees representing different groups from across the Saltash community. We are always impressed with the huge variety of decorations and how beautifully the trees fill the church.

The Christmas Tree festival runs from Saturday 27th November until Friday 10th December.

    Maths Week 2021

We had a special Achievers assembly today where we found out about some of the exciting activities that each of the classes took part in as part of Maths Week 2021. An amazing variety of mathematical challenges were completed and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Please look at the PDF below and ask your children if they can tell you about it. Well done to the competition winners and a big thank you to Mrs Swabey for organising

    School Council

The members of Brunel's School Council have been busy already this term.

Last week, the LKS2 councillors, on behalf of the rest of the school, took a trip to the post box in order to post an array of fantastic persuasive letters written in support of keeping Saltash leisure centre open. We all hope that the letters will be read as part of the consultation process and that those making the decisions are made aware of the huge impact the closure would have on the local users and how detrimental it would be to Brunel school and the wider Saltash community.

Children in Need is always our first fundraiser of the year and it's the job of the school council to decide how to raise money. This time they have chosen to 'Get Your Strictly On' with a Sparkly/Smart or Scruffy mufti day. We look forward to being dazzled on Friday 19th November!

    Ancient Egyptian Treasures

This afternoon, I was very honoured to be invited to cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Year3/4 Ancient Egyptian pop-up museum.

All the exhibits were designed and produced by the children as part of a homework task  and we have been very impressed by the quality and variety of the work presented.

On display are such treasures as Tutankhamun's death masks, sets of canopic jars, replica pyramids, a life size sarcophagus and many more beautiful artifacts and buildings constructed  from all kinds of materials.

Please visit the class blogs for further information and photos.

Please see below our Brunel Achievers since the beginning of term . Well done to everyone chosen; it certainly is something to be proud of and a reason for congratulations from the whole family.

    Royal Institution Visit

We were delighted to welcome Nerys and  the Royal Institution's Science roadshow to Brunel this week. The 'Explosive Food' show created great excitement amongst the children as well as loud bangs and flashes. Please ask your child about their favourite moments. In the afternoon parents, carers and the wider community were invited to join Nerys to learn how to become rocket scientists. The hall roof took quite a beating from exploding rockets and if you were there you'll know I'm much better suited to being a headteacher than a lab assistant!
The purpose of the roadshow is to raise the profile of science, ignite interest and motivate pupils and parents to try experiments for themselves. If you're interested, the Royal Institution have a dedicated You Tube channel demonstrating all the fun experiments you can easily do at home using everyday objects and substances. For example: magically putting out candles with carbon dioxide made from water and fizzy tablets; using fairy liquid to break the surface tension of water; drink bottle rockets and how to become a 'Memory Master'. Search Ri Experimental and do let us know if you try any.

It's time to think about next September!
