Introducing the KIRFs Café...
What are KIRFs?
KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) are pieces of mathematical knowledge
that we want the children to learn off-by-heart or be able to work out very
quickly (within 3 seconds).
They are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin
mathematics. They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding,
subtracting, multiplying or dividing. They will include facts such as
number bonds, counting on, back, times tables, equivalence of units of measure,
and square numbers.
Each year group is allocated key facts to focus on throughout the year, in line
with age related expectations. These should be practised for rapid recall.
Check out the website and class blogs for the newest KIRFs each Half Term.
We look forward to welcoming you to the KIRFs Cafe on Wednesday 17th April at 3.10pm in
Finnygook.

A terrific end of term has been had here in Mousehole class! We have had fun using our Myth writing skills to create a completely different Myth, we have learnt about perimeter and rounded up our learning on Holy week in RE. The children thoroughly enjoyed our DT morning where they made their moving monsters. They are coming home today to be enjoyed-can your child explain how they work? In PE, we used a map of the school grounds to navigate in orienteering.
Check out our awesome cross country runners with their medals and our superstar readers of the week below:
Have a super Easter break everyone!
In DT we have been learning and investigating pneumatic systems. The fun of investigating has led us to our design stage this week. Next week we will be creating our moving monsters (our mythical beasts of the Tamar which we have also been writing about in English!). Can your child tell you how their design will work?
What fun we are having on Science week with Live lessons, quizzes, competitions and an interactive and investigative visit to Saltash library where we have had such fun. Can your child tell you more? Just look at the smiles in the photos!
We have really enjoyed World Book Day this year. Not only have we dressed up, but we have enjoyed reading in random places, joining a group and listening to a different adult reading a story, a character book hunt (featuring the teachers!), a footy booky quiz and a great author show LIVE from Michael Rosen. What a super day to celebrate our love of books!
It’s been
another fun-packed week in Mousehole class! The class loved their first
orienteering lesson in PE and we worked hard on the importance of working
collaboratively to reach the end goal; something we will continue to work on
for this unit. The children loved discovering the different puzzle pieces
before being like ‘Teamwork Tiger’ to put them together. Can they tell you what
the map was of?
In English,
we have started our Myths unit of work. The children have loved learning our
WAGOLL: Theseus and the Minotaur. They have been creative with their own story
maps and actions.
In maths,
we have been using short multiplication method to work out our multiplications
before using them to help us reason and solve problems.
We
discovered how Alexander the Great impacted the world in History and enjoyed
working collaboratively by using QR codes on the iPad to complete our own
research.
Just a
reminder that if the children are in my spelling and reading group (not Read
Write Inc.) that our spelling tests are every Friday. This week is the first
set of spellings from the new booklet.
Next week,
on Thursday, we will be celebrating World Book Day with lots of fun around
reading. The children can dress up as a book character. Please don’t go to any
expense for this and use things you that the children already have at home.
Check out some of the Greek pots that the children have worked hard on below:
A highlight from this first week back after half term has to be the Mousehole Machine dance. Watch Y3 perfrorm their final dance piece to you below. They have spent lessons perfecting their machine like moves and ideas to create this wonderful final piece. Well done Mousehole class I'm super proud of you!
We had lots of Archie fun this morning with different activities and enjoyed parading in our outfits for St Anne's this afternoon. The children's and resident's smiles beamed from ear-to-ear.
Today has also been Safer Internet Day and we have learnt about the importance of telling a trusted adult when needed.
Number Day
Mousehole Class
had great fun exploring the patterns that are created with multiplications.
Using a circle that
had been divided into 10 equal spaces, we connected the digits based on the ones
number in a given times table i.e. 3, 6, 9 the 2 of 12, the 5 of 15, the 8 of
18 etc, until we returned to 0 (our starting point). Once we had completed the
2, 3 and 4 times tables and examined the shapes we had made, we then predicted
which pattern the 6 times table would match. We thought the 6s would match the
3s as we had learnt in previous maths lessons that the 6 times table is double
the 3. It turns out the 6s match the 4s. This puzzled us for a while until we
had completed the 7s (which matched the 3s) and the 8s (which matched the 2s).
We had a theory that the number bonds to 10 had the same patterns, so we completed
the 9s and 1s to see if they matched. They did. Mathematical magic!
